You can talk to him and activate the bonfire, but if you progress forward from that point and enter Lost Izalith, he will go hollow. Instead, after you talk to him at the bonfire, take the shortcut right before the Firesage Demon fight as the above posters mentioned. There are some Chaos Bugs in the tunnel. One of them drops a Sunlight Maggot.
